February is the shortest month of the year, but it certainly is packed with holidays and special events! The Children's Department will have several fun craft and music programs in February to celebrate Black History Month, Valentine's Day, Mardi Gras, and the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.
We kick off the first week (1/30-2/2) with the theme of "Favorite Stories" for all our storytimes. We'll have fun with a parachute at the end of the program.
For the second week (2/6-2/9), we'll have a Valentine's Day theme for the storytimes. However, we'll add a bit of a Mardi Gras theme for two programs. On Wednesday, February 8 at 4:30 pm., we'll be making Mardi Gras masks and hats for the Afterschool Craft. On Thursday, February 9 at 6:30 pm, we'll have a special program to honor Black History Month. Joseph Dixon and JAWAD of Houston Young Audiences will be here to present "Congo Square." Mr. Dixon will show how Congo Square in New Orleans influenced the development of music in America from jazz, blues, and ragtime. He'll show and play instruments (drums, triangles and jawbones) and tell the audience about the musical contributions by African American musicians such as Louis Armstrong, W.C. Handy, Jelly Roll Morton, and Scott Joplin. Be prepared to hear rousing songs like "When the Saints Go Marching In", "Do you know what it means to miss New Orleans," and a fun Mardi Gras song "Iko, Iko" about a meeting between groups of the colorfully dressed Mardi Gras Indians at a parade. This program welcomes music fans of all ages.
The third week (2/13-2/16), we'll have a Mardi Gras theme for the storytimes. We'll hear stories about parades and catch some beads in a mini-Mardi Gras parade at the end of the program. On Tuesday, February 14 at 4:30 pm, we'll celebrate Valentine's Day by decorating Valentine cookies and doing some fun Valentine crafts.
The fourth week (2/20-2/24), we'll have a grand ole' time getting ready for the rodeo. We'll have stories with a western theme about horses, cowboys and cowgirls.
For the last week (2/27-3/1), we'll have a "Favorite Stories" theme during the storytimes. We'll also have fun with the parachute at the end of storytime. On Wednesday, February 29 at 4:30 pm, we'll make a scratch-off necklace that any cowgirl or cowboy will want to wear to the rodeo.
These programs require tickets. They are free and available at the Kids Information Desk starting 30 minutes before the program.
