Like many movie, fashion, and awards show fans, I spent last Sunday evening watching the Oscars. Voted on by the members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the Oscars are the crowning moment in a hotly contested awards season. Every year, I join a group of friends, fill out my ballot, cross my fingers and hope my favorites win. There is oohing and aahing over the dapper men and elegant women on the red carpet (and the inevitable gasps of horror when someone makes a fashion misstep), cheering when a favorite wins and frustration when they don’t. Last Sunday was no exception.
For the most part, this year’s Academy Award winners were fairly predictable. I was secretly hoping for a surprise Nick Nolte Supporting Actor win, but was still happy to see Christopher Plummer (Captain von Trapp! ) finally receive that honor. Octavia Spencer, my vote for best dressed, gave a heartfelt speech after her much-deserved Supporting Actress win. I was thrilled to see Jean Dujardin win Best Actor, and his speech (“I love your country!”) was charming, as always. The biggest surprise of the night was Meryl Streep’s Best Actress win. She seemed just as shocked as the rest of us when Colin Firth read her name, but who wouldn’t be after 29 years? Predictably, but happily, The Artist took home the award for Best Picture, giving viewers at home a much-anticipated view of Uggie, the best dressed canine at the Oscars!
What did you think of the Academy Awards? Did your favorites win, or were they snubbed? Who do you think should win best dressed? Which movie are you most looking forward to watching? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
