There is a reason that year after year mysteries continue to be some of the most popular books, movies and television shows. It’s the same reason curious souls continue to scour the wilds in search of Bigfoot and the Chupacabra, and the same reason ordinary folks travel to far off lands. Humans are hard-wired to investigate and explore. Curiosity may have killed the proverbial cat, but it’s done wonders for humankind. Nothing, it seems, motivates us like an unanswered question, a blank spot on a map, a mystery.
This year, Harris County Public Library’s Summer Reading Program’s theme is ‘Get a Clue @ the Library ,’ and it’s designed to encourage you and the whole family to exercise—to indulge—that part of you that loves mysteries, craves answers, and seeks adventure! Summer Reading Fun 2012 is all about investigating books and libraries and the worlds they open up to you.
Here’s how it works:
• Children will get a cool ‘Get a Clue @ HCPL’ wristband just for registering and children who read or listen to 10 books or log 500 minutes of reading/listening time will receive a free book (while supplies last).
• Teens who read or listen to 5 books or log 600 minutes of reading/listening time will get a USB flashdrive wristband (while supplies last).
• Adults who read or listen to 5 books or log 600 minutes will be entered in random drawings to win a Kindle Fire, a Nook Tablet or a $30.00 bookstore gift card at conclusion of the program. Additional random drawings from all adult registrants will be held during the summer for a chance to win an eReader.
In the spirit of this summer’s theme, ‘Get a Clue @ the Library,’ HCPL wants you to explore reading in any direction your interests take you, so, if you choose, you can log the minutes you read rather than the number of books. In other words, you are free to explore everything the library and the world of reading has to offer from eBooks and eAudiobooks, to blogs, magazines, websites and beyond.
As the name suggests, HCPL’s Summer Reading Fun isn’t just about reading; it’s about getting the most out of your summer. It’s about having fun and learning while you’re doing it. All HCPL branches will host special programs to fire the imagination of kids, teens and grownups alike. We will explore nature with a variety of wildlife programs featuring fascinating critters. There will be magic shows, musicians, puppetry and pizza-making demonstrations, book discussions, virtual author visits, writing workshops, crafts for all ages and much more. Visit our Events Calendar for a complete list of Summer Reading Fun activities.
Register anytime between Monday, June 4, and Saturday, August 11 2012 at www.hcpl.net .
