This summer Pixar released its 13th feature film – and its first with a female lead. The movie is titled Brave, and tells the story of a young Scottish woman and her clash with tradition – and her mother’s expectations. I thoroughly enjoyed the movie, especially because it was about Scotland. The title itself is inspired by the song Scotland the Brave [2], the unofficial national anthem.
When the first trailer for Brave was shown last year, I knew I had to go. I’ve always loved reading about Scotland and seeing films set there. And apparently I’m not the only one. Scottish history, full of adventure and clans and rebellion, has been a staple of movies and TV series from the beginning. Shakespeare’s MacBeth [3] has been told and retold and analyzed numerous times. In addition, well-known Scots have been the subject of many films. But we also have films and series set in more modern times, giving us a look at the wide range of Scottish life, from idyllic settings to gritty drama, from legend and fantasy to harsh reality.
