2012 Texas Lone Star List!

Lone Star State by Defninitive HDRThe Lone Star list is released each year by the Young Adult Round Table of the Texas Library Association to highlight exceptional recreational reading titles for tweens and teens in grades 6-8. There are some great reads, as always, on this year’s list. What have you read? What are you happy made the list? If you were to make a list of your top books from 2011, what would you include?

2011 National Book Award Winners

Cover Art: Salvage the Bones by Jesmyn WardThe National Book Awards were handed out on Wednesday night in New York City. As you might recall, the announcement of the NBA finalists received more attention than usual this year (though not the kind the organization would have wanted). Amid the customary, and probably justified, grousing about the nominees’ obscurity and the snubbing of well-received works by better-known (and better-selling) writers, was the mistaken nomination, and forced withdrawal, of Lauren Myracle’s Shine.

Teens’ Top Ten 2011

Teens' Top Ten LogoThe Teens’ Top Ten list is like a “people’s choice” list; each title is nominated and voted on by teens, ages 12-18.  So unlike other award lists or awards for young adult literature, which are decided pretty exclusively by adults who work with teens, the Teens’ Top Ten is a chance for teen readers to voice their choice and pick out the best books published in the past year.  The nominated titles are announced each spring during National Library Week and online voting happens between mid-August and mid-September.  The final Teens Top Ten list is announced each year during Teen Read Week.  This year 9,000 teens voted nation-wide.  Do you see your fav

2011 National Book Awards Finalists

National Book Award medal - courtesy of the National Book FoundationThe finalists for the 2011 National Book Awards were announced on October 12. As usual the list is a mix of relative unknowns and old reliables, critically acclaimed bestsellers and small press prestige titles. The NBA, along with the Pulitzer, is the most coveted prize awarded to American writers. The roster of past winners reads like a Who's Who of the last half century in American letters. They include Jonathan Franzen, Ha Jin, Cormac McCarthy and Alice Walker for fiction; Patti Smith, Joan Didion, Tom Wolfe and Maxine Hong Kingston for nonfiction; Galway Kinnell, Elizabeth Bishop, W. H. Auden and William Carlos Williams for Poetry; and Sherman Alexie and Jeanne Birdsall for young people's literature.

Hispanic Heritage Month: Seven Nobel Laureates and a Might-Have-Been

Cover Art: La Casa Verde by Mario Vargas LlosaThey don’t hand out the Nobel Prize in Literature to just anybody. Unlike the Pulitzer and National Book Award, which are given for a single work, the Nobel is awarded for an author’s entire body of work. The result is that the prize isn't given out to the latest hot young thing, the flavor of the month, the flash-in-the-pan, the one-hit-wonder. The Nobel is awarded for sustained excellence.
