Tried and True: HCPL's 2017 Top Ten Lists

top ten 2017 graphicJust when you think the world has become a little too predictable, the sky dumps Lake Michigan on you in the span of about 18 hours. That's when you decide that maybe that rut you were stuck in was kind of cozy and comforting in a way. 

This year's top ten most circulated novels at Harris County Public Library reflect that very human need for stabiliity. The list is chock full of familiar names like Grisham, Evanovich, Sparks and Baldacci (twice). These are writers who have consistently produced high quality work--not particularly groundbreaking perhaps, but it is consistently entertaining and immanently readable. However, there are a few surprises sprinkled into the lists because, when you come down to it, the only thing you can really count on is that humans are just as unpredictable as the world they live in. 

Just ask Astros fans.  

Colson Whitehead wins the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction

Colson Whitehead's bestseller and Oprah Book Club pick, The Underground Railroad, has won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction.The Pulitzer committee lauded Railroad "for a smart melding of realism and allegory that combines the violence of slavery and the drama of escape in a myth that speaks to contemporary America."

Celebrate International Women's Day with the Bailey's Women's Prize for Fiction

The Bailey's Women's Prize for Fiction has released the longlist for their 2016 prize. This year’s longlist honors both new and well-established writers; over half the longlist is occupied by debut novels alongside four previously shortlisted authors. Seven nationalities are represented including the first Zimbabwean author to be longlisted for the Prize.
