The Bear Creek Book Club meets regularly on the first Wednesday of each month at 7:00 pm. The book selection for February is The Elegance of the Hedgehog by Muriel Barbery. This clever novel explores the upstairs-downstairs goings-on of a posh Parisian apartment building.

Summary: Davinsky Labor Camp, Siberia, 1933: They've worked her like a slave - and almost starved her to death. March selection: The Age of Innocence.

Join the Mystery Book Club on Wednesday, January 20th at 11:00 am to discuss “B” is for Burglar by Sue Grafton. Summary: Finding wealthy Elaine Boldt seems like a quickie case to Kinsey Millhone. The flashy widow was last seen wearing a $12,000 lynx coat, leaving her condo in Santa Teresa for her condo in Boca Raton. But somewhere in between, she vanished. Kinsey’s case goes from puzzling to sinister when a house is torched, an  apartment is burgled of worthless papers, the lynx coat comes back without Elaine, and her bridge partner is found dead. Soon Kinsey’s clues begin to form a capital M-not for missing, but for murder: and plenty of it.

NEW YEAR, NEW TIME

Like to talk about books?  Tired of eating alone?  The Atascocita Branch Library Adult Book Club has a new meeting time.  Starting in January 2010, the library will be hosting their "Lit 'N' Lunch" Adult Book Club on the second Thursday of the month at 1 pm.

ZeitounTitle to be discussed: Zeitoun, by Dave Eggers.  Date of meeting: Wednesday February 3, 11:00 am, at 6104 Auden.  Summary: "Abdulrahman Zeitoun, a successful Syrian-born painting contractor, decides to stay in New Orleans and protect his property while his family flees.

Baldwin Boettcher Branch -- Evening Book Club

BelovedTitle to be discussed: Beloved by Toni Morrison. Date of meeting: Monday, February 1, at 6:30 PM. Summary: Staring unflinchingly into the abyss of slavery, this spellbinding novel transforms history into a story as powerful as Exodus and as intimate as a lullaby. Sethe, its protagonist, was born a slave and escaped to Ohio, but eighteen years later she is still not free.

The Mystery Continues

The new year will find us in Paris, France.  We will be looking at the book, Death du Jour by Lou Jane Temple.  The setting is in Paris and this book is part of the Spice Box Mystery series.  So if you like mysteries and historical fiction, please join us for our trip to 18th century Paris.  The book club will be meeting on January 20th at 2 pm.  Come enjoy a lively discussion and a crepe a la martine.
