Baldwin Boettcher: Popping up in the Community in January!

Ricky and Lucy-BB BirdsHello all. We have dearly missed each of you who made our library such a special place. We know it has been a dreadfully long time since we lost our local library, but fear not! We are popping up in the community starting in late January! Beginning January 22 through May 21st (except for March 12th, 19th, and April 2nd) a few familiar faces will be heading to Cypress Trails United Methodist Church with as many books as we can carry. Unfortunately, it will be a miniature collection since our arms are not that large, but we will be doing our best to bring material you'll love as well as a big smile as we anticipate your arrival!  Cypress Trails UMC is located at 22801 Aldine Westfield Rd.

Tried and True: HCPL's 2017 Top Ten Lists

top ten 2017 graphicJust when you think the world has become a little too predictable, the sky dumps Lake Michigan on you in the span of about 18 hours. That's when you decide that maybe that rut you were stuck in was kind of cozy and comforting in a way.

This year's top ten most circulated novels at Harris County Public Library reflect that very human need for stabiliity. The list is chock full of familiar names like Grisham, Evanovich, Sparks and Baldacci (twice). These are writers who have consistently produced high quality work--not particularly groundbreaking perhaps, but entertaining and immanently readable.

There are one or two surprises sprinkled in because humans are, in the end, predictably unpredictable.

NightingaleTitle to be discussed: The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah.  Date of meeting, January 9, 6:30 p.m.  Summary: "France, 1939. In the quiet village of Carriveau, Vianne Mauriac says goodbye to her husband, Antoine, as he heads for the Front. She doesn't believe that the Nazis will invade France... but invade they do. When a German captain requisitions Vianne's home, she and her daughter must live with the enemy or lose everything. Vianne's sister, Isabelle, is a rebellious eighteen-year-old girl, searching for purpose with all the reckless passion of youth. She meets Gäetan, a partisan who believes the French can fight the Nazis from within France, and she falls in love as only the young can...completely. But when he betrays her, Isabelle joins the Resistance and never looks back, risking her life to save others. 'The Nightingale' tells the stories of two sisters, separated by years and experience, by ideals, passion and circumstance, each embarking on her own dangerous path toward survival, love, and freedom in war-torn France; a heartbreakingly beautiful novel that celebrates the resilience of the human spirit and the durability of women."

Crosby Book Club Meeting Friday, December 15 at 2 pm

Crosby Book Club will meet Friday, December 15 at 2 pm to discuss The Big Burn: Teddy Roosevelt and the Fire That Saved America, by Timothy Egan.  The Big Burn, or the Great Fire of 1910, is believed to be the largest single fire in recorded U S history, destroying more than 3 million acres in Idaho, Montana, and Washington.  In addition to the story of the fire, Egan chronicles President Theodore Roosevelt's struggle to protect the nation's shrinking wilderness for future generations, and the early years of the U S Forestry Service.  The Big Burn is a historical account whose lessons are applicable to contemporary political issues.

New members are welcome.  Copies of the book are available for check out at the front desk.

Christmas bellsTitle to be discussed: Christmas bells by Jennifer Chiaverini.  Date of meeting: Tuesday, December 12, 6:30 p.m.  Summary: "In present-day Boston, a dedicated teacher in the Watertown public school system is stunned by somber holiday tidings. Sophia's music program has been sacrificed to budget cuts, and she worries not only about her impending unemployment but also about the consequences to her underprivileged students. At the church where she volunteers as music director, Sophia tries to forget her cares as she leads the children's choir in rehearsal for a Christmas Eve concert. Inspired to honor a local artist, Sophia has chosen a carol set to a poem by Longfellow, moved by the glorious words he penned one Christmas Day long ago, even as he suffered great loss. Christmas Bells chronicles the events of 1863, when the peace and contentment of Longfellow's family circle was suddenly, tragically broken, cutting even deeper than the privations of wartime. Through the pain of profound loss and hardship, Longfellow's patriotism never failed, nor did the power of his language. "Christmas Bells," the poem he wrote that holiday, lives on, spoken as verse and sung as a hymn."

Peek Into Someone Else's Life

The Long Haul by Finn MurphyHave you ever seen someone and thought, "I wonder what it would be like to be them"? Confession: I've always thought the life of a long-haul truck driver would be kinda cool. They're like the modern day version of the old ocean explorers. What things they'd see. What people they'd come across. Well, I have to wonder no more. I can read The Long Haul: a Trucker's Tales of Life on the Road by Finn Murphy.
