A customer was checking out some books the other day by William Kent Krueger and she was telling me that she loves his books. She had been eagerly awaiting his newest work and she encouraged me to read them. So I started to investigate him. He writes novels set in rural Minnesota and the stories often involve regional history and the local Native American tribes. The first in the series isIron Lake. Have any of you read his books? If so, what did you think?

As fictional heroines go, Katniss Everdeen is as tough, smart and resilient as they come. No doubt about it. But there are plenty of other heinie-kicking heroines out there, just as Panem isn't the only chillingly dystopian society in the YA aisle. If you have been looking for a gateway into contemporary American poetry, the National Book Award finalists are not a terrible place to start. Five poets acting as judges have declared these five books to be “the best” of all poetry collections published this year, with the winner being announced at the black tie awards ceremony next Wednesday evening, November 19th at 7pm.
