Atascocita Online Book Clubs start June 1

Just in time for summer, Atascocita Branch is starting two online book clubs via Goodreads.com.  One book club is for adults (18 and over) and the other for teens (grades 9-12).  Discussion will happen in the group online and guided by Atascocita Branch staff.  Each book read is two months long, but you can read at your own pace in that time.  Discussions are broken down by amount of pages or chapters, and there's a specific place for you speed readers for spoilers.

If your time is limited or maybe you communicate better through text, this is a great way to share reading with others in your community.  Anticipate some fun quizzes and polls along with these groups, as well as a variety of books to read.

Where in the Tech Are We Going?

The Inevitable by Kevin KellyThe 2017 Read Harder Challenge at Book Riot has led me to a book that you might like: The Inevitable: Understanding the 12 Technological Forces that Will Shape our Future by Kevin Kelly. It's a glimpse into where we are and where we're going - and just how we'll be led by the things we've made.

Crosby Book Club meets Friday, May 19 @ 2 pm

In tribute to Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month, Crosby Book Club will meet on Friday, May 19, at 2 pm to discuss The Wangs vs. the World, Jade Chang's debut novel.   When Charles Wang loses everything in the financial crisis of 2008, he embarks on a cross country trip to secure his family and return to his Chinese roots.  Chang's story chronicles some of the ridiculous excesses of the privileged, at the same time revealing her characters' marked capacity for humor and resilience.

A diary washed ashore after a tsunami, a Buddhist Nun, a writer living in the rustic wilderness, a story reaching across oceans...

A Tale for the Time Being is a thought provoking read.

Cooking, the Graphic Novel

Food Anatomy by Julia RothmanIf a cookbook could be made into a graphic novel, it would look something like Food Anatomy: the Curious Parts & Pieces of our Edible World by Julia Rothman. It's part food encyclopedia, part cooking lessons, and all easy on the eyes. The first thing I learned: the difference between New York, New Jersey, Chicago, St. Louis, and Detroit styles of pizza. My next lesson will be how to make cheese.
