I'm Batman! by ShellyS Graphic novels are really a format and not a genre. Graphic novels can feature non-fiction stories like, for example, biographies and histories. Graphic novels can also feature fiction stories of any number of genres – like realistic fiction, science fiction, fantasy, romance, horror, and many, many more. Whether you’re already an avid graphic novel reader or you’re interested in giving graphic novels a chance, you might consider looking for one of these books that have just come out or are new to our shelves. What do you recommend?

Every Day is Free Comic Book Day at your library!

Did you know Saturday, May 5th, is Free Comic Book Day? Comic Book shops across the nation participate in this day to bring new faces to their businesses and inspire new readers. This is a great chance to receive a free and cool book; but don't forget your library also has graphic novels available for free (as long as you return them back on time!). Stop by the library to browse the shelves or search our catalog to see what own system-wide.

Cover Art: The Quitter by Harvey Pekar, Art by Dean Haspiel Gone are the days when people with both a weakness for comic books and aspirations of becoming “serious” writers had to slink across town and hope no one they knew drove past as they walked out of the shop with the latest issue of Zap! or Weirdo wrapped in plain brown paper (to give it that little extra patina of shame).

I miss those days.

Manga vs Manhwa

Unless you're in the know, you're probably thinking Man-whu? It's okay. I never heard of it before either. Manhwa is to Korea as Manga is to Japan. (Or if you're more visual, Manhwa:Korea::Manga:Japan)

It can be pronounced either "mahn-hwa" or "mahn-hua." You have probably seen Manhwa at the bookstore or the library because it is usually shelved with Manga.

Before Watchmen

Watchmen fans will be excited to know a prequel series is expected to be released later this year! Before Watchmen is a collection of 7 miniseries with stories and illustrations done by various individuals including Brian Azzarello and Darwyn Cooke.

The Maverick List promotes recreational reading for teens and tweens in 6^th through 12^th grades.
