“Hidden Figures” and NASA at Your Library

Hidden Figures[En español abajo] February is African-American History Month and NASA Month at your library. A NASA spokesperson will be here on TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 20, at 5:30 to tell us the surprising stories of the little-known but critical contributions of women to the US Space Program. On THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 22, at 4:00 pm, with materials from NASA, kids of all ages can visit the moon, map the stars, explore space technology, and eat like an astronaut. Read the book “Hidden Figures,” then come and discuss it with other readers on FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 23, at 4:00 pm.  [We still have 2 remaining FREE COPIES of the book available for people who register to attend the book discussion.] And on TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 27, come and watch the movie “Hidden Figures” with us.

February Crafts for Grown-ups

Ladies and gentlemen, we have two February projects planned for your crafting pleasure. On Tuesday, February 13, at 1:00 pm, we will be making woven heart baskets, like these:

African-American History + NASA =

Hidden Figures bookFebruary is African-American History Month, and at the Aldine Library, we’re also making it NASA month. To combine the two, we are hosting a discussion of the book “Hidden Figures” on Friday, February 23, at 4:00 pm and showing the movie on Tuesday, February 27 at 4:00 pm. Read the book that the fabulous movie was based on! A limited number of free copies of the book are available for people who register for the book discussion.

Free Computer Classes

Remember that your public library offers free computer classes. The English-language classes are on Mondays and Wednesdays from 5:00 pm to 6:30 pm. They cover the basics of computers, laptops, tablets, and smartphones and commonly-used software like Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Publisher. Click here for more details.

Reading Help for Little Kids, Volunteer Hours for Teens

Book BuddiesParents with children in Kindergarten - 3rd grade: Do you want to help your child develop a love of reading? Then sign them up to be a Little Buddy!
Teenagers in 7th – 12th grade: Do you want to be a mentor? Do you need service hours? Then volunteer to be a Big Buddy!
Harris County Public Library's Book Buddies program pairs trained volunteers (Big Buddies) with children in Kindergarten through 3rd grades (Little Buddies). For 10 weeks, the Buddies meet once a week to read children’s books together for 45 minutes.

PARENTS with children ages 11-17. Many kinds of cancer are caused by a virus called HPV. There is a vaccine that can prevent your children from ever getting any of those cancers. To find out more, come to a presentation by the University of Texas School of Public Health at the Aldine Library on Thursday, January 25, at 1:00 pm. Tell your neighbors to come, too!

If You Can Read This . . .

If you can read this, you can help someone learn to read. Harris County Public Library will train you to be a volunteer (unpaid) literacy tutor and will supply you with materials. You would be teaching an adult, one-on-one. There will be a free tutor training at the Aldine Library on Thursday, February 22, from 1:00-4:00 pm. What’s Coming Up

3D snowflakeBesides our usual events, here are a few special things we have going on at the Aldine Library in the next week.
The next Doctor Who Club meeting is Saturday, January 6, at 1:00 pm. Come to watch episodes, talk about books, and play Doctor Who-related games.
We are going to host a “Book Tasting” for ages 8-12 on Monday, January 8, at 4:00. We will have four tables set up. Each one will have a different type of book and a person to talk to you about the books. “Taste” all four types of books and see which kind you like best!
