Do you enjoy collecting, knitting, model building, or are you looking for a new idea to do crafts with your child?  Harris County Public Library has a Hobbies and Crafts Reference Center database that you can access anytime.  Just go to www.hcpl.net, click on Databases, and Crafts and Home to find the Hobby and Craft Reference Center to see the wonderful resources and ideas available.

Love to write short stories?

The Texas Association of Authors is hosting it's 3rd Annual Texas Short Story Writing Contest.  If you fancy yourself a writer, this is a great chance to submit your work for prizes and possible publication in a short story collection.
 
The contest is open from March 1, 2017 to July 31, 2017.   The author must live in Texas and the story must be between 1500-3000 words in length.  If you think you have what it takes, please go to the Texas Shorts website for more information.

TEEN BOOK CLUB

The Teen book club will meet Tuesday, February 14 at 4:30 p.m.  This month’s book selection is, It Ain’t so Awful, Falafel by Firoozeh Dumas.  All teens are invited to join us for yummy snacks and a fun discussion.

EASY HOME COMPOSTING

The Katy Garden Club will meet on Thursday, February 9 at 11:00 a.m.  Jean, Harris County Master Gardener, will present various methods of easy composting for your garden.  Jean is very knowledgeable and has some unique composting ideas to share.

DOWNLOADING eBOOKS AND MOVIES

Did you know your library card gives you access to movies, TV shows, and magazines, as well as books?  Our eMedia class on Saturday, February 4 at 1:000 p.m. will go over how to download FREE books and magazines from Overdrive. Also, how to stream movies/TV shows on Hoopla. Bringing your mobile devices (iPad/Android/Kindle, etc.) is optional but recommended. 

Last chance for Little Buddies

This is the last week to get your kids signed up for our Book Buddies program.


Book Buddies is a free program that brings children and adults together to share the joy of reading. It pairs trained adult volunteers (Big Buddies) with children in K-3rd grades (Little Buddies.) For 10 weeks, the Buddies meet once a week for 45 minutes of shared reading.

Our meetings will be Mondays at 5:00pm. The dates for the program are 2/6, 2/13, 2/20, 2/27, 3/6, 3/20, 3/27, 4/3, 4/10, 4/17.

SMALL BUSINESS WORKSHOP

Have you dreamed of having your own business?  The Katy Branch Library will host a small business workshop on Saturday, January 28 at 1:00 p.m.  Learn how to get started in becoming your own boss!

Fan of the Houston Astros?

Attention Houston Astros fans!  As many of you know, Jeff Bagwell has been elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame Class of 2017. He is the second player in franchise history to earn this great achievement!  In celebration of this, fans can attend a fan pep rally on Monday, January 23rd at Minute Maid Park.  This event is free and open to the public.  Doors open at 4pm and the program starts at 6pm.  Several former Astros will be in attendance to celebrate and congratulate Bagwell on his great accomplishment.What a great opportunity for any baseball fan to see and be a little part of history!  For more information, go to the Astros website.
