One Community, One Book

Krafty Corner: Mini-Witch’s Hats

Witch hats (3)Our next craft project for adults will be making and decorating miniature witch’s hats attached to plastic headbands. They have lots of cuteness potential! Medicare Open Enrollment!

The Medicare Open Enrollment period runs from October 15-December 7. If you already have Medicare, you should get information about your options to see if your current choice is the best one for you. If you are over the age of 60 or so, you should find out what the options are so you’ll be better prepared when your time comes. We will have an expert at the library on Saturday, October 13, from 2-3 pm to explain it all and answer your questions. Please click here to register.

Kids’ & Teens' Events on Monday

SlaughterhouseThis Monday, October 8, we have 2 very special events. For teens, we have “Read In” from 3:30-5:00 pm. Hang out with friends, get a FREE copy of “Slaughterhouse-five,” and have a chill place to read. We will have pizza for participating readers! (Ages 13-18)
For kids, this week’s Computer Explorers will play “Plants vs. Zombies” from 4-6 pm. Armed with dozens of zombie-zapping plants, from the classic peashooter to the devious cherry bomb, you’ll need to think fast and plant faster to stop all types of zombies dead in their tracks. Learn about the game and play with us! (Ages 7-15)

If You Can Read This . . .

Tutor 3It probably doesn’t surprise that there are adults all over the U.S. either can’t read or can’t read well. It may surprise you that, if you can read this, you can help one of them. How? By being a volunteer (unpaid) literacy tutor. No teaching experience is needed and we will train you and supply you with materials. The Aldine Library will host a free tutor training workshop on Friday, October 5, from 1-5 pm. Children, Teens, and a Love of Reading

Book Buddies AldineDo you have a child in kindergarten-3rd grade? Do you want to help them develop a love of reading?
Do you have a teenager in 7th-12th grades? Does she want to be a mentor? Does he need service hours? Then he or she could volunteer to be a Big Buddy!
Harris County Public Library's Book Buddies program pairs trained teen volunteers (Big Buddies) with children in kindergarten through 3rd grade (Little Buddies). For 10 weeks, the Buddies meet once a week for 45 minutes of shared reading.
