News of the World[For adults & teens] You’re probably not aware of this, but, every October public libraries, school libraries, and college libraries all over southeast Texas participate in an event called “Gulf Coast Reads.” The idea is to get as many people as possible, from Columbus to Beaumont and Willis to Galveston, to read the same book at the same time so that they can talk about it with their families, friends, coworkers, fellow bus riders, fellow elevator passengers, and anyone else.

Perler beadsI have good news! Next week is the third week of the month. Why is that good news? Because it means we have Craftastic for ages 6-12 after school on Monday (9/18) and Craftastic for ages 12-18 at 4:30 on Wednesday (9/20). Both groups will be creating jewelry or decorations from perler beads. Don’t know what perler beads are? Come and find out. You can design and create very cool things with them!

Teen Volunteers Needed

Child readingHCPL has a program called Book Buddies which involves letting children ages 4-8 work on their reading skills with the individualized, nonjudgmental help of a volunteer in 7th – 12th grades. If you think your teenaged sons or daughters would be good at working with younger children, please encourage them to volunteer. They would need to complete an application (available at the customer service desk of the library) by Sept. 13 and attend a training session on Thursday, Sept. 14, from 4:30-6:00. They would also need to commit to coming and working with a child every Thursday afternoon from Sept. 21-Nov. 16. It will be very rewarding to see their “Little Buddy’s” reading improve as a result of the time they spend together.

Aldine Library, After Harvey

Our thoughts are with the members of our community who have experienced flooding in their homes and businesses or lost their cars to the floodwaters. If you were flooded and you have a dog or cat, you can stop by the library and pick up pet food courtesy of the SPCA.
Rainwater came through the roof of the Aldine Library in places, and, as a result, the library doesn’t smell so great, but, otherwise, we had no damage. We will resume our normal schedule starting Monday, Sept. 11.
Four Harris County libraries will be closed for an extended period of time due to flood damage, and we have displaced staff from three of those four branches working with us here at Aldine. We are so glad to have them!

I could not return my library materials because I could not reach the library due to high water. Am I still responsible for the late fees?

If you return your books by September 15, you will not accrue late fees.

UPDATE: Most HCPL Branches Resume Normal Business Hours & Programming, Monday, Sept. 11.
