Goodreads Choice Awards 2014

On December 2 the popular website, Goodreads, announced its 2014 Choice Awards. These awards are nominated and voted on by users of the site. Following is a list of some of the winners. How many did you read this year?

Landline, Rainbow Rowell

Though they still love each other, Georgie and Neal's marriage is in trouble. Two days before they are supposed to take their two kids to Neal's family in Omaha for Christmas, something comes up at Georgie's job and she can't go. When Neal takes the kids anyway, Georgie wonders if their marriage is over. But when she finds a way to communicate with Neal in the past, she feels like she's been given an opportunity to fix her marriage before it starts. Is that what she's supposed to do? Or would Georgie and Neal be better off if their marriage never happened?

National Book Awards 2014: Poetry Edition

If you have been looking for a gateway into contemporary American poetry, the National Book Award finalists are not a terrible place to start. Five poets  acting as judges have declared these five books to be “the best” of all poetry collections published this year, with the winner being announced at the black tie awards ceremony next Wednesday evening, November 19th at 7pm.

If you ask me, awarding prizes for works of art--whether they be books, movies or single malt scotches--is pretty silly, if not quixotic. I mean, how can we pretend to objectively declare something as complex as a novel or nuanced as a great pop song to be "better" than another when most of us have our hands full deciding whether M&Ms or Reese's Pieces would go better with our Double Dutch Chocolate frozen yogurt?
