September is Library Card Sign-up Month

Did you know that September is Library Card Sign-up Month? Signing up for a library card is a great step towards academic achievement and lifelong learning. Harris County Public Library cards are free to Texas residents of all ages. Registered borrowers may borrow materials from any Harris County Public Library branch and have full use of all HCPL online resources, such as eBooks and audiobooks through OverDrive and OneClickDigital, streaming video through Kanopy and OverDrive, magazines through Flipster, and research databases for business, genealogy, language learning and more. To receive your full service card, visit any Harris County Public Library Branch to fill out an application and provide proof of mailing address, such as your photo identification.

It's Book Club Week @ at Library!

Calling all adults and teens! It's book club week! This Thursday at 1pm our adult book club, Lunch 'n' Lit will be discussing How to Stop Time by Matt Haig so bring your lunch and enjoy some lively discussion. 

Also on Thursday, Teen Book Club will be discussing banned books at 4:30pm. You can read any banned book of your choice and join us to find out why the book was challenged. You can also make a tote bag with you favorite literary quote. Snacks will be provided. 

Get on The Road to College @ the Library

Are you ready for college? What's the difference between the SAT and the ACT? How are you going to pay for college? Get these questions answered this Saturday, September 8th from 10am-2pm at The Road to College open house. Drop in any time and chat with admissions officers, testing experts, and financing gurus!

Teens: Get Adventurous with D&D @the Library

Are you ready for an adventure? Starting this month, we will embark on a two different 4 month long Dungeons and Dragons campaigns. You can sign up for one of them on Thursday, August 30th at 6pm at G.O.A.T.: Gaming on a Table. 

New to D&D? No problem! We will walk you through character creation and gaming basics in the first session. 

Not into D&D, we have plent of tabletop games for you to play. Don't miss it!

FOAL: Book Sale, August 18

The Friends of the Atascocita Library (FOAL) will be holding their annual book sale August 18. The sale will have donated teaching materials, children’s books, fiction and nonfiction, hard backs and paperbacks, 25¢ music CD’s, 25¢ magazines, and much more. Most items are priced at $.50 – $1.00. FOAL reusable book bags are available for $3. A preview sale for FOAL members will be on Friday, August 17th from 5PM-7PM. If you are not a member, you can purchase a membership at the door. August 18th, individuals with disabilities may shop from 9AM-10AM, and the sale will open to public from 10 AM-5PM.

Teens: Dance Like a K-Pop Star and Live Like a Rock Star This Week!

Teens, get ready to rock this week at the library! Join us from Wednesday through Friday at 3pm for K-Pop Dance Camp! Learn the latest K-Pop dances from BOLT (Board of Library Teens). 

On Saturday at 5:30pm you can Live Like a Rock Star! Complete Level 2 of the Atascocita Teen Summer Reading program for a ticket to the Battle of the Fake Bands! Form a band and lip sync battle with others for the title of the Kings or Queens of Rock! But watch out, sometimes your life in rock and roll can take unexpected turns and you might fall from the top of the charts to the bottom. Permission slips are required.

Teens: Fashion and Survival This Week at the Library

This week at the library you can create rock and roll fashion and try to survive the Oregon Trail! 

On Wednesday, we have Fashion Lab: Dress Like a Rock Star at 3pm. Get ready for our end of summer party, Live Like a Rock Star, by creating fashions fit for a rock star.  Are you ready to rock? Join us for a Rock and Roll wardrobe makeover just in time for next week's after-hours program, Live Like a Rock Star. We will have some clothes on hand to distress and paint, but you are free to bring your own clothes (just make sure your parents are okay with you painting them).

On Thursday at 6pm, can you survive the Oregon Trail?  Play a live action version of the classic video game and see if you make it in the Wild West!

Are you driving to your vacation destination this year? Why not try an audiobook to keep you and the family occupied and entertained in the car? Did you know Harris County Public Library has thousands of audiobooks? You can borrow CD audiobooks at your local branch, or you can use the following apps. You can check them out for free instantly using just your smart device.

Libby

Libby is an app by OverDrive. You can begin using Libby by downloading the app from your preferred app store, then search for Harris County as your library. You will then be prompted to enter your Harris County Public Library card number. After that, you can begin to search, borrow, and enjoy audiobooks.

Teens: Do You Have Your Pass to Video Game Jam?


Teens, do you have a pass to one of this summer's hottest gaming parties? All you have to do is complete Level 1 in Teen Summer Reading Program and pick Atascocita as your branch.  When you claim your prize, you will get your permission slip for a night of video games including Live Action Pac-Man and our Switch Mario Kart Tournament!  We have pizza, prizes, and video games! Hurry because this offer expires on July 20th! Make sure your forms are turned in early to get your Video Game Jam swag bag!
