Book Hunters in Brief #64: Teen Tech Week 2015

March 8 - 14 is Teen Tech Week and this year's theme is "Libraries Are For Making," Harris County Public Library's Book Hunters have some suggestions to spark your creativity.

The Story of Astoria

Astoria by Peter StarkHave you ever been to Astoria, Oregon?  You've seen it if you watched the movies Kindergarten Cop, The Goonies, Free Willy, and many more.  I happened upon it driving one day (which isn't that easy to do), and I was rendered speechless by the beauty of entering it by the bridge over the Columbia River.  I imagine John Jacob Astor's expedition group had much the same reaction to this unspoiled, unsettled area in the early 1800's.  Read about their thrilling and often tragic adventure in a new book called Astoria: John Jacob Astor and Thomas Jefferson's Lost Pacific Empire by Peter Stark.

In the spirit of the season, Harris County Public Library's  Book Hunters have rustled up some rootin’ tootin’ reads to put you in the mood for barbecue and funnel cake.

Tame the Tech

It seems as if kids are born knowing how to tame technology. Many kids can navigate their way around a tablet even if they've never used one. You, meanwhile, would be happy just to get the goofy screen to stop rotating. Don't you wish there was a manual for this stuff? Well, there is.

Book Hunters in Brief #57: Celebrate the Life and Works of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

January 19 is the day set aside to honor the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. We celebrate him, in part, because he was one of those rarest of individuals: a courageous man of action who knew that, in the end, the power of his words was his best weapon against injustice. Those words did the near impossible; they spurred others to action--action, it must be remembered, that entailed great personal risk for those who chose to undertake it. Such was the power of his gifts that he gave others courage and resolve they might otherwise have lacked. And his words, nearly 50 years after his assassination, still have the power to change the world. What better way to celebrate Dr. King's life and works than to read those words. Below are several suggestions from Book Hunters.
