Teen Read Week 2007

2007 Teens' Top Ten

Area teens will be reading for the fun of it as Harris County Public Library celebrates the tenth annual Teen Read Week(TM), October 14 – 20, 2007. They join thousands of other libraries, schools and bookstores across the country who are encouraging teens to celebrate this year’s theme, "LOL @ your library®." Teen Read Week(TM) is the national adolescent literacy initiative of the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA).  This year’s theme encourages teens to read humorous books and graphic novels just 'for the fun of it'.

Meet the HCPL Young Adult Staff

Harris County Public Library has 26 branch libraries across the county.  Many of these libraries have staff dedicated to working with the young adults of the community.  Let's meet on of them!

Jeff Coyle

Jeff Coyle is the Assistant Branch Librarian for the Kingwood Branch Library.  He also does the Young Adult programming for the branch.

What do you like to read?

I like nonfiction for the most part.  I'm particularly interested in philosophy and 20th century history.  When I read fiction, it is usually Sci-Fi/Fantasy or Humor.

What was your favorite book when you were a teen?

I really like the Lord of the Rings trilogy and all (at that time four) books in the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series.

What do you like best about your job?

I like helping people find the information they need.  I like talking to the people that come into the library and getting to know them a little bit.

What is your best memory of being a teen?

I enjoyed High School and playing on the football team.  I didn't get to play as much as I would have liked, but I loved being on the team.  I still like seeing my former teammates when I go back to visit my folks in Kansas.  I've known most of those guys since we were in grade school, so we have literally grown up together.

If you could relive your teen years what would you do differently?

I would relax and have more fun.  I wouldn't have been so serious and looking forward to college so much that I didn't enjoy High School as much as I should have.

If you could give advice to your "teen self" what would it be?

I would tell myself to relax and have more fun and to just be yourself, if people don't like you for who you are, that's their problem.

Is there anything else you would like to share with us?

Learn to like yourself and be proud of who you are.  Self-respect will take you a long way and keep you out of trouble in the long run.
