HCPL Offers Programs for Teens
Quick Picks for Reluctant Young Adult Readers
Harris County Public Libraries offer a wide assortment of programs for teens.  There are movies, crafts, book discussions, computer classes, games, and all kinds of special programs.  Teen programs are planned for ages 12-18 and are free.  You can look at the branch calendar for your local library to find out what they offer. This is a chance to hang out at the library for more than books and homework.  You will meet new people and have a great time. The Quick Picks for Reluctant Young Adult Readers is a book list that was created to have high appeal to teens.  These are books that a teen, 12-18 will pick up on their own and read for pleasure.  This list contains both fiction and nonfiction and even graphic novels.

What do you like to read?

I enjoy reading fiction, mostly mysteries, and nonfiction, politics and social issues.  However, since I have been conducting teen book clubs my reading interests have expanded to classics, graphic novels and award winning teen titles.

What was your favorite book when you were a teen?

I still remember what an impression Pearl S. Buck's The Good Earth had on me.  It was the first non-juvenile book I read.

What do you like best about your job?

The best part of my job is my teen book clubs.  Of course I love to read, so I am reading all kinds of great literature.  And, I love to have book discussions with the teens.  The teens are very perceptive, and I get a lot more out of the books when we discuss them.

What was the most unique experience you had as a teen?

The summer between my junior and senior years in high school my family camped across the US and Canada.  It was a great adventure and also gave me the opportunity to see how beautiful our country is.

If you could relive your teen years what would you do differently?

I would have been more self confident.  I was very shy as a teen.  I think shyness, lack of self confidence, is the biggest deterrent to self realization.

If you could give advice or a message to your "teen self" what would it be?

Try not to give in to peer pressure.  Even if your interests are not "in", pursue them anyway because they will make you happy.

Is there anything else you would like to share with us?

The other day as I was considering how I spend my money, I realized that I have two big expenses:  travel and education.  Exploring and learning make me feel fulfilled and very happy.
