Young People's Poetry Week

Tayshas Reading List

Harris County Public Library celebrates Young People's Poetry Week; April 16-22, 2007.  Young People's Poetry Week is in April which is National Poetry Month.

Young People's Poetry Week was created to encourage people to celebrate poetry—read it, enjoy it, write it!  Each of our libraries will have programs revolving around poetry during April for teens, children and adults.

Poetry Slam Book List

The Tayshas Reading List is a book list created annually by the Young Adult Round Table of the Texas Library Association.  The objective of the Tayshas Reading List is to motivate young adults to read more and to enjoy opportunities to become a community of readers in Texas.

Meet the HCPL Young Adult Staff

Harris County Public Library has 26 branch libraries across the county.  Many of these libraries have staff dedicated to working with the young adults in the community.  Let's meet one of them!

Stratford Branch Library

Sarah Davis

Sarah Davis is the Branch Manager of the Stratford Branch Library.  She does the young adult programming at her branch library.

What do you like to read?

Harry Potter, of course!  Also, I like reading mysteries.  Some of my favorite authors are:  Patricia Cornwell, David Baldacci, and Mary Higgins Clark.  In the children's books, one of my favorite authors is Kate DiCamillo.

What was your favorite book when you were a teen?

I don't think I had a favorite book as a teen.  I read comic books:  Dick Tracy, Archie, Veronica, Casper and I read Nancy Drew books alot.

What do you like best about your job?

I love meeting the public.  I also like everything there is to do at the library.  I view everything as a challenge, puzzle/mystery, or housekeeping.  I like a neat and orderly place where people can come and not only find what they need, but feel comfortable and relaxed.

What was your most embarrassing moment as a teen?

Well, no one else knew or could tell, but I went to school with my shorty pajama bottoms on under my skirt!  Now, this was when the skirts were a full circle and had lots of crinolines under them to make them stand out--like in the 60s.

What is your best memory of being a teen?

One of my best memories was performing in various high school plays in front of public audiences.  One play of which I don't remember the title of, I played the main character and had the center stage by myself for most of the play.  There were only 3 characters in this play.  That was scary, but I felt exhilarated afterward for having not forgotten any of my lines.

If you could give advice to your "teen self,"  what would it be?

Don't let others make you feel that you have no self worth.

Is there anything else you would like to share with us?

My favorite relaxing thing to do is go to the beach.  I could easily be a beachcomber!  I love the ocean and all the shells and sea life.  I have been to the Baja part of the Pacific Ocean, the Pacific Ocean, Caribbean, the Atlantic Ocean, North Sea, and the Irish Sea.
