The Texas State Library is promoting its first Teen Summer Reading Program called Texas Teens Read! The 2008 theme is Game On! and the art work is by graphic novel artist and author Rod Espinosa. All branches of Harris County Public Library will be hosting the program and have activities and special programs for teens. Registration is online at www.hcpl.net and begins Monday, May 12, 2008.

Meet the HCPL Young Adult Staff

Harris County Public Library has 26 branch libraries across the county.  Many of these libraries have staff dedicated to working with the young adults of the community.  Let's meet one of them.

Ryan Fennell

Ryan Fennell is the Young Adult Librarian for the Aldine Branch Library.  Ryan has been the Young Adult Librarian there for 8 months.

What do you like to read?

Nonfiction, especially about the entertainment industry.

What was your favorite book when you were a teen?

My favorite book was The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald.  While reading that book it hit me that novels are not written, but crafted.

What do you like best about your job?

Customers think I'm smarter than I really am.

What is your best memory of being a teen?

I used to travel cross-country quite a bit with family and friends.  I miss that.

If you could relive your teen years what would you do differently?

I would have started a dotcom and sold it while the getting was good.

If you could give advice or a message to your "teen self" what would it be?

Don't eat that potato salad that Mom accidently left out.

Is there anything else you would like to share with us?

The Library is a great place to be!
