Help Us Serve Your Community

HCPL gratefully accepts the assistance of volunteers to help serve the public. Tasks and opportunities vary from branch to branch, but volunteers are expected to meet the requirements of the library. In order to become a volunteer, you must complete and submit the appropriate volunteer application.

At most branches, volunteers assist with ongoing needs on a variety of projects and tasks. Volunteer opportunities vary by branch. A few examples of tasks handled by volunteers include, but are not limited to:

  • Displays & bulletin boards
  • Shelving materials
  • Crafts
  • Book sales
  • Literacy, ESL and Citizenship tutoring
  • Special projects

Volunteers are representatives of HCPL in a support role and bear expectations in that role. These expectations include:

  • Referring customers to a staff person if they need assistance.
  • Respecting the public and being responsive to their needs.
  • Being willing to learn.
  • Abiding by the schedule and length of service that you have agreed to with the library
  • Abiding by the library's Confidentiality policy

To become a volunteer, complete an application, which includes the optional “Release of Photograph or Name” form. Take this completed form to your local branch, where you may be asked for additional information.

If you are accepted as a volunteer, you will be asked to read and sign the 'Volunteer Waiver and Release Form'. If you are minor, a parent or guardian will be asked to read and sign the 'Volunteer Waiver and Release Form for Minors' (see below for complete waiver details)

Other Volunteer Opportunities

No teaching experience necessary. We supply the training, materials and teaching space. You supply a little time and the desire to help others improve their lives in your community.

Be a Book Buddy
Share your love of reading with a child in your community.

Book Buddies is a free program that brings children and volunteers (adults or teens) together to share the joy of reading. It pairs trained volunteers (Big Buddies) with children in Kindergarten through 3rd grades (Little Buddies). For 10 weeks, the Buddies meet once a week in the afternoon for 45 minutes of one-on-one shared reading.
