Good friends are more than just people who share your taste in movies or music and who laugh at your jokes even on the seventeenth retelling. They are more than just the people you can count on to help you move in exchange for delivery pizza and a lukewarm beverage. Friends--good friends--make you a better person. They see your unique qualities, and your potential for good and they support you in your efforts to reach that potential. Library Friends groups could not be more aptly named because they do exactly that for the libraries they love. Our friends make us better.
Harris County Friends of the Library (HCFOL) and the 26 branch friends groups it brings together make so much of what Harris County Public Library does possible.
- HCFOL provides funding for Harris County Public Library's big annual literacy initiatives and programs like Summer Reading, Tournament of Books, and Book Buddies, as well as branch programming through mini-grants.
- Branch friends groups raise funds for individual HCPL locations through book sales, direct donations, and other activities to support programming, to purchase supplies and equipment, and more. Branch friends groups funding helped and continue to help make our Maker Labs a reality. They purchase books and other library materials to augment public collections you see on the shelves. Their funding even allows branches to hire temporary workers to help during the peak summer months.
October 18 - 24 is National Friends of Libraries Week and we want to take the opportunity to thank all of our Friends and to encourage you to consider joining or donating to Harris County Friends of the Library. Your time and donations go directly to help HCPL in its core mission to enrich lives and strengthen communities.
