To Celebrate its 10th Year, Gulf Coast Reads Put It Up for a Vote.
For its tenth year celebrating the joys of shared reading, Gulf Coast Reads, the annual regional reading initiative, selected three titles and put the final decision up for a public vote. Readers across nine southeast Texas counties have spoken, and Gulf Coast Reads is delighted to announce that The House in the Cerulean Sea by T.J. Klune is the Gulf Coast Reads 2021 selection.
This October, as we have each October since 2011, Harris County Public Library along with public, academic, school libraries as well as dozens of community partners will encourage readers along the upper Texas coast to read and discuss Klune’s New York Times, USA Today and Washington Post bestseller. In addition to book discussions, HCPL and other partner organizations will present a wide variety of related events designed to help readers connect with the book and each other.
"At its heart, Gulf Coast Reads is about strengthening community engagement through shared reading," says Gulf Coast Reads spokesperson Jennifer Schwartz, "So it just made sense to let the readers choose the book, and their choice is outstanding!"
About The House in the Cerulean Sea
The House in the Cerulean Sea tells the story of Linus Baker, a by-the-book caseworker in the Department in Charge of Magical Youth. He's tasked with determining whether six dangerous magical children are likely to bring about the end of the world. It is an enchanting love story, masterfully told, about the profound experience of discovering an unlikely family in an unexpected place—and realizing that family is yours.
About TJ Klune
TJ Klune is a Lambda Literary Award-winning author (Into This River I Drown) and an ex-claims examiner for an insurance company. His novels include the Green Creek series, The House on the Cerulean Sea and The Exraordinaries. Being queer himself, TJ believes it's important—now more than ever—to have accurate, positive, queer representation in stories.
About Gulf Coast Reads:
Gulf Coast Reads: On the Same Page is an annual regional reading initiative focused on promoting the simultaneous reading or listening to a selected title by those living along the upper Texas Gulf Coast.
The reading initiative’s goal is to encourage our communities to read the same title during the month of October in order to encourage readers to come together in discussions about it with neighbors, co-workers, friends and their families, as well as in classrooms and in libraries throughout the region
