“And then, there was none.”
If that quote doesn’t put a shiver down your spine, then you have not read the mystery novel of all mystery novels.
Agatha Christie is the best-selling novelist of all time, outsold only by the Bible and Shakespeare. Her first novel was published in 1920 and from that time to the present, her books have never been out of print. She is the author of sixty-six detective novels, fourteen short story collections, and one play that has the distinction of being the most continuously run play since its publication in 1952.
The mystery genre was not a new concept when Christie started writing, indeed, an earlier “Can’t Get Enough” blog was all about Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s creation of the world's most famous detective, Sherlock Holmes. But, Agatha Christie took the genre to new heights. She set a formula for murder mysteries that would become the basis for future mystery novels.
Christie was the creator of two detectives, that could probably give Sherlock Holmes a run for his money – Hercule Poirot, Belgian detective, and Miss Jane Marple, the quintessential old-lady busybody who had a nose for solving crimes.
An interesting little fact about Christie’s mysteries, and perhaps a bit of a spoiler, but the butler never did it. Just about anyone else in her stories might be a suspect, but not the butler. Or did he?
