There are many clichés about pairings that you can find in stories. Some things just go together: bagels and lox, football and wings, wine and cheese (I must be very hungry this morning, all I can think about is food). When I set out to write this post, I was determined to stay away from the cliché, but the more I thought about it the more the analogy kept coming back. Two great things that are made even better by putting them together.
Since 2018 Houston’s Society for the Performing Arts (SPA) and Harris County Public Library have been working together to bring a little bit of the library to SPA performances, and a little bit of SPA performances to the library. What started with a preshow reading of The Very Hungry Caterpillar has turned into a great partnership with library-created preshow activities at many SPA events. Pushing the partnership to the next logical step was only too easy: we formed a joint SPA/HCPL book club.
Thus, Pages and Stages was born. For four select 2022 performances, Harris County Public Library will host special book clubs at select branches.
After attending the branch book club in the month before the show, HCPL and SPA invite you to join us for a special pre-performance gathering at Jones Hall downtown. The preshow will have guest speakers, games, trivia and an opportunity to socialize with small bites and drinks at Understory, a food hall across from Jones Hall. Sounds like a great date night out, or a chance to mingle with new literary-minded friends. What’s exciting about the preshow is that you do not need tickets to the paid show to participate. We are very excited to invite you to our new joint book club, possibly with a few surprises along the way.
