What's in an App?

Harris County Public Library has moved forward with technology and services beyond our library walls.

Not only do HCPL cardholders have access to dozens of research databases, they also have access to many of those as apps. , but here we’re going to be listing all available apps you can download to your devices for free with your library card.

Here’s a little rundown of what they are and why you should download them.

HCPL App

Download this now! If you manage several accounts (you/your spouse/ the children) the Linked Accounts feature is enough alone for you to download this app. It stores all library card numbers, you can toggle between accounts to see what’s checked out, what’s due, what’s on hold, and how many fines you have.

Personalize your home page! Tap the menu button and select preferences and you’ll get this lovely picture (screenshot #2) where you can drag up and down your selections.

Try the Scan ISBN Number feature. Let’s say you’re at the store one day and you find an interesting book, all you have to do is scan the barcode (found on the back of the book or movie) and it automatically searches for that exact item in our catalog. You’ll already be signed in on the app, and once the item is found in the catalog, request it.

Transparent Languages

Available as a website and app, this language learning program has lesson plans and games for over 100 languages and is completely free for every library customer.

To make the process easier, go to our Transparent Languages page on our website for initial login access. I recommend creating a profile using the browser and then logging into the app.

Libby

Download Libby to access the digital materials your library has available. With a catalog of thousands of books, Harris County Public Library allows customers to check out up to 30 items at a time, and place over 30 holds. It has a beautiful interface and is a lot more intuitive than the original app (Overdrive) ever was.

Personally, I find that the website experience is more convenient to browse for books. Head on over to our Overdrive page.

Types of items available include eBooks, eAudiobooks, Magazines, Movies.
