About this Branch

We offer a wide variety of materials, programs, and classes in a family-friendly, bilingual atmosphere. Come on in!

History

The library originally began in 1927 when Margaret Black started loaning books from the local jail. During the 1950s, the library shared facilities with the welfare office and a clinic.  In 1967, The City of South Houston acquired land and purchased a barracks building from Ellington Field and moved it to South Houston. The library was housed in this building until it moved into its current home in May 1991.  The current building was a cooperative effort of Harris County, the City of South Houston, and the Harris County Community Development Agency with funding provided through a grant from the Library Services and Construction Act. In 2012, with the assistance of a Community Development Grant, the library underwent renovations and expanded with the addition of a computer lab.

Friends of the Library

The A.M.I.G.O.S. (Amigos Meeting Intended Goals of South Houston) was established as a 501c3 nonprofit corporation in December 2005.  The small group of volunteers remains active in helping raise funds for the use of the library to purchase supplies for crafts and programs.  They host fundraising activities such as used book sales, the sale of snacks, candies and soft drinks that patrons can enjoy while in the library and gift basket raffles.  To join the Friends of the South Houston Library stop by the branch and pick up a short application.
