In collaboration with the Houston Food Bank, the libraries of Harris County have been providing a Summer Meal Program for kids in surrounding communities since 2012. Through the years, the service has grown and made some adjustments including feeding the chaperones of the children at the program. Although, this year with Covid-19, and social distancing becoming the new normal, we are implementing a big change with a curbside meal service.
Instead of walking into the library to sit down and eat a meal at point of service, this year we are keeping the program as no contact as possible. Families may drive up to designated areas outside each participating branch to retrieve their free and healthy meals to take home, much like a drive through process. It is called “Kids Cafe’ To Go”, and will be held from noon to 2 pm while supplies last. This service will go on until the end of July.
This year with the great need there is in the community for food and financial help for those that have lost jobs due to the pandemic, it is even more necessary than ever before to make the Summer Feeding Program a success. The Food Bank and Harris County Public Libraries are doing the best they can to make that happen. So, if you know someone struggling financially or a family that could simply use a little help with meals, please spread the word and tell them about this wonderful program. We all need to look out for each other during times like these, and this is one way we can do just that. To see which library is more convenient for you, check our website at hcpl.net. Stay safe everyone!
