Book Buddies

Book Buddies is a free program that brings children and volunteers (adults or teens) together to share the joy of reading. It pairs trained volunteers (Big Buddies) with children in Kindergarten through 3rd grade (Little Buddies). For 10 weeks, the Buddies meet once a week in the afternoon for 45 minutes of one-on-one shared reading.

What Parents Are Saying...

"My son is not naturally social but a small group of similar aged children and a consistent meeting with the same adult opened him up and he really enjoyed his time with his buddy."

"I loved that it familiarized my child with all the areas of the library, not just where they usually go for books. "

"Made reading fun and interesting for my child "

"I loved that he got to read more and thought it was more fun with an older kid. He was paired with a great big buddy. I also got some time to read while I waited."

"My child gained so much confidence by how much positive energy everyone poured into him."

What Big Buddies Are Saying...

"I loved how I got to see how much my little buddy improved!! In the course of ten weeks, she went from not knowing how to read to being able to point out the words she recognized on the page and read to me! "

"I loved being able to help my little buddy increase his ability to read harder words and able to read for a continuous period of time! "

"The curiosity in the child I was paired with was a refreshing sight."

"I really enjoyed working with my little buddy. I liked how it pushed me out of my comfort zone and be more social."

"What I most enjoyed about being a Big Buddy is being able to spend time with kids and having the opportunity to improve my skills in teaching"

Book Buddies is made possible by the generous support of the Harris County Friends of the Library.
